Definitely not that complicated

A short one today as my life is currently very complicated and conspiring against my preference to spend all of my days working out what to blog. But do you know what isn’t complicated?

Consent.

It’s been much discussed recently; what with college campuses bringing in Affirmative Consent rules, and with the film of the book that managed to make lack of consent look sexy raking it in at the box office. You may not know this, but in the UK we more or less have something similar to ‘affirmative consent’ already. It’s how Ched Evans was convicted while his co-defendant was not – and is along the lines of whether the defendant had a reasonable belief that the alleged victim consented. From the court documents it appears that while the jury felt that it was reasonable to believe that the victim had consented to intercourse with the co-defendant, it…

The Scariest Aspect of the Bill Cosby Rape Allegations: From a Sexual Abuse Survivor’s Point of View

You’re not alone. I was older than you but it happened to me too. I’ve only told three people, my husband to refute his stereotypes about victims and my daughters as a cautionary tale. Take care of yourself.

A Thousand Lives

Lately, I can’t go anywhere without hearing or reading about the allegations of rape against Bill Cosby. This post isn’t about who is right or wrong in regards to that. About who is guilty and who is innocent. About who is lying and who is telling the truth. This post is about the reaction of the public to these allegations, and how angry it makes me.

That perhaps they’re written to sound callous and rude, but maybe it’s really people just asking questions. So I will answer these questions. Or at least for how they relate to me. For I am a silent victim of sexual crimes. One who never told a soul…

I don’t like being lied to……

This morning, I was driving to work and one of the disc jockeys on my radio station was relating a story about getting an estimate on carpeting for his home. He said the installer initially gave him a quote of $5k but then made a call to his “sales manager” and after some back and forth that sounded like a used car sale, he offered the job for $2400. The disc jockey told him no thanks and then went on a small rant about being lied to. He said he feels like his is being lied to all the time, by service providers, salespeople, the news media and politicians.

I drove the rest of the way to the office thinking about his outrage and realizing I felt the same way. Then I got angry. There is no reason that we as Americans should constantly feel like our intelligence is being insulted, that we are being duped and taken advantage of, especially by the news media and our politicians. Yet we are and we do.

The goal of this blog is to try to help cut through some of the bullshit.
